The only thing that ever mattered to Phanius was his own. Raised on Emmenas' estate, he grew up in a world where his genetics demanded he dedicate himself to outmaneuvering and outperforming. And so he did, both to his fellow students and to his so-called 'Master'. He had realized early on that Emmenas' philosophy was flawed, but hadn't the words to dispute it. So he turned to a friend, Nalise, a Kaleesh boy with the brilliance to disprove Emmenas but the spine of an amoeba. He helped Nalise realise his own - one of few selfless acts he's ever attempted - and it ruined his life. The fool was unable to keep their very heretical secret a secret, and instead of just killing the Kaleesh and returning everything to normal, Emmenas instead decided to kill the only person Phanius could've cared about: his twin sister. Phanius didn't even have the foresight to prepare himself for that. Since Aurin's death, Phanius has plateaued. To say he's motivated to study or recitate or sit himself up in the mornings would be to deny reality while it stands before you. But, like it or not, time is passing Phanius by, and if he doesn't make something of himself now, he never will.
